Alpha Engineering is registered as an independent contractor with the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the WV Dept. Of Miners' Health, Safety, and Training. We are also a member of the WV Coal Association, National Mining Association and the Society of Mining Engineers (AIME-SME).

Alpha Engineering Services, Inc. was founded in 1991 by Gary M. Hartsog. The company is based in Beckley, West Virginia.
Since starting to offer services to the industries, Alpha Engineering has worked with many clients, both large and small, to bring coal from concept to full production and later to closure and reclamation, improve the safety and efficiency of operations through ventilation, haulage, time-motion, and other studies and evaluations, and use current and new technology and concepts to solve problems through engineering analysis and concepts.

Alpha Engineering specializes in underground mining work for assisting our clients in maintaining safe, efficient and productive operations with minimal environmental impact.
Our offices are fully networked and integrated with internet capabilities in AutoCAD, Carlson Mining Package (SurvCAD), ICAMPS, Go-To-Meeting, and other software packages that provide a full range of engineering and presentation capabilities.
Surveying and layout work is done with electronic distance meter total stations and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). We also have a full range of ventilation instrumentation for use in mine and industrial ventilation situations.

President of Alpha Engineering is:
Gary M. Hartsog, PE PS(SU), graduated from West Virginia University in 1976 and 1979 with BS degrees in Education
and Mining Engineering, followed in 1985 with Master of Science degree in Mining Engineering and in 2005 with Master of
Business Administration. Gary worked at the mine and divisional levels with Eastern Associated Coal Corporation and
Peabody Coal Company for 15 years before resigning to start Alpha Engineering Services, Inc., in 1991. Gary is a
Registered Professional Engineer in 12 states, a Registered Professional Surveyor with Underground Surveying endorsement
in WV and holds a current WV Mine Foreman/Fireboss Certification among other certifications. He is in Responsible Charge
of Alpha Engineering. While Gary is well known as a practitioner in mine ventilation, fan and other ventilation related
work and of underground surveying and mapping, he also practices in all areas of mining engineering including mine design,
water handling, haulage, etc.
Underground Mining Group is led by:
L. David Prelaz, PE, graduated from Virginia Tech in 1984 with a BS degree in Mining Engineering.
After graduation, David spent 14 years working at the mine level in various capacities including
Mining Engineer, Section Foreman, Manager of Mines and Manager of Engineering. During that time he
acquired certification as an Assistant Mine Foreman and became registered as a Professional Engineer
in the state of West Virginia. In 1998, David joined Alpha Engineering where he has worked as a Senior
Mining Engineer with primary focus in the areas of underground mine planning, ventilation and production
improvement.
The Surface Mining, Civil and Environmental Group is led by:
J. D. Higginbotham, PE PS, graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology with a BS degree
in Civil Engineering and from Marshall University with a Master of Science in Engineering Management.
J. D. is a Registered Engineer in WV and VA and a Registered Professional Surveyor in West Virginia.
J. D. has held Engineering and Management positions in private industry and government services. Since joining
Alpha in 2006, J. D. has focused on environmental permitting, surface construction, land and tax issues and
applying GIS technology to mining properties.
